The Importance of Patience and Discipline in Investing

“The stock market is a device to transfer money from the impatient to the patient,” says Adam Pearl, quoting the famous investor Warren Buffett. It’s a philosophy that’s at the heart of Adam’s approach to investing and financial planning for his clients.

“It’s one of the few things we can control — our ability to be patient,” he explains. “Time and time again, those who are patient get rewarded, whether it’s through less volatility, better risk-adjusted returns or just a better experience when it comes to investing.”

As the newest member of the Polson Bourbonniere Derby Wealth Management | iA Private Wealth team, Adam brings a decade of experience from the mutual fund industry.

“For the past ten years I’ve been on the sales side or client support side of the industry,” he explains. “But when the opportunity presented itself to go from the sales side of our business to the advisor side, I jumped at it,” he says.

The move to Polson Bourbonniere Derby was a natural one for Adam. He had worked with the team for over seven years, developing a deep understanding of their approach and values. “The culture, the people and the opportunity to grow here are unique — they’re not easily found in our industry,” he says.

Adam’s favourite part of his work is the relationships he builds with clients. “Without a doubt, I really enjoy speaking to and getting to know them and their families,” he says. “I truly believe it’s a privilege, not a right, to be responsible for helping investors reach their investment objectives.”

“We encourage them to be curious, to ask questions, to take genuine interest, and most importantly, to be excited about their portfolios as well as their plans for both wealth accumulation and retirement income,” he says. This focus on client engagement and education is a cornerstone of Adam’s approach to his work.

“If I could tell clients and prospective clients one thing it would be to encourage them to remember that, regardless of the many factors that are out of their control, being in command of their financial future is there for the taking and should be a positive experience. Everyone has an opportunity to be worry-free when it comes to investing — at the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about.”

Outside of work, Adam and his wife Marnee recently welcomed their first child, Eli, into the world. When he’s not doing the hard work of being a new dad, he’s an avid golfer and a passionate fan of Toronto sports teams. Adam is also actively involved in volunteer work, supporting the less fortunate through the Out of the Cold Foundation. He is also a proud participant in the Gentle Ben Charity Challenge, a cause close to his heart — it was founded in honour of his grandfather Ben Pearl who lost his battle with cancer in 1997. To date, the charity has raised over $1.6 million for cancer research and support programs.
